Global Tropical System Tracks - December 2014 The following Tropical System tracks are compiled from various centers, but unless otherwise cited, the data is from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) or from a reanalysis using GRADS. NCEP Reanalysis data provided by the NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD, Boulder, Colorado, USA, from their Web site at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/. The data usually does not match the information from the advisories, but is closer to the Best Track data. However official Best Track data should be considered the final and official tracks. The data also includes Investigation areas as well as pre- and post-advisory information With the September 2014 issue, I added a column, labeled "ST" to document the Status or Strength of the system. Several times in 2014, we have had systems with gale winds (35+ kts) but the systems were not closed and thus did not qualify as a Tropical Cyclone. This classification is an attempt to clarify the system's status. Codes to be used are: W - Wave B - Disturbance L - Low D - Depression T - Tropical Storm H - Hurricane/Typhoon R - Remnent Low E - Extropical SS - Sub-tropical Storm SD - Sub-tropical Depression SPECIAL SUMMARY 1. COMPARING 23W (JANGMI) AND 90W (INVEST) There has been discussion on the question of the relationship between 23W (Jangmi) and 90 W. JTWC considered this to be separate systems however JMA analysis and discussion imply that these are the same system. The following table lists the positions from NRL and JMA. NRL data can be considered to be "Best Track" while the JMA data is operational data. E -- 1008 TD 4.7N 109.5E 1008 Note that reanalysis does not show any low pressure area near the (NRL) 90W position until 01 January 2015 1200z but there is a significant jump of the low between 0600z and 1200z. At the time of this writing, we do not know what the JMA or JTWC "best track" will show, but this Author feels that 23W disappated 01 January 2015 after 1200z and the system designated as 90W represents a distinct system which JMA considered to be a Tropical Depression. SPECIAL SUMMARY 2 02S (2010-2011) TROPICAL CYCLONE ANGGREK Tropical cyclone ANGGREK formed in the South Indian Ocean in late October 2010. Operationally, the system was tracked by Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Australian Bureau of Meterology (BOM). The JTWC Best Track lists the maximum 2-minute winds at 55 knots and a central pressure of 982 mb. The BOM operational warnings listed maximum 10-minute winds of 50 knots and a central pressure of 986 mb. However the BOM Best Track lists the maximum 10-minute winds of only 21 knots and considers the system as a tropical low rather than a tropical cyclone. The Author has re-examined this system in an attempt to determine the actual status of the system. Using reanalysis data from Earth System Research Laboratory - Physicial Sciences Division *, we performed a 6-hour sea-level pressure analysis and found a large and symmetrical cyclone with a track similar to both the operational and best track data. This track passed approximately 70 kilometers from Cocos Island airport (WMO number 96996) which provided the only observations near the system. Maximum reported winds were from 01 November 2010 at 19:30 U.T. and were 24 knots. We were unable to locate any observations of gale (35 knot) winds associated with the system. Therefore, we examined satellite observations. Polar satellite visual pictures showed a well formed cyclone with a feature consistent with a developing eye on 01 November 2010. Additionally, an operational analysis by NOAA Regional and Mesoscale Meterology Branch (RAMMB) using an experimenta; Multiplatform Satellite Surface Analysis shows an asymmetric wind field with maximum winds of 55 knots in the west quadrant. It should also be noted that the 35 knot winds extended only approximately 50 kilometers in the direction of Cocos Island airport. Thus, the Author feels the Satellite presentation with a possible eye feature as well as the RAMMB wind field analysis are consistent with this system being a Tropical Cyclone with maximum winds of 50 - 55 knots. * Reanalysis data provided by the NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD, Boulder, Colorado, USA, from their Web site at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/ === MED === No Systems tracked === S. These positions are taken from Naval Research Lab information which, in the early stages often track satellite features rather than a defined low pressure area. This often leads to abrupt shifts in location as convection wanes, especially during the disturbance stage. Reviewing satellite pictures, I believe that the positions are part of a large disturbance where the western part waned as the easten part developed, At times, NRL will assign a new invest number when this occurs, apparenly in this case they retained the initial number. As the author of these tracks, I usually choose NOT to question the data, but present the data for the readers to evaluate. In this case, I leave the initial data, but suggest that it could be appropriate to ignore the track prior to 20 December 2015 1200 UTC.
