Global Tropical System Tracks - October 2016 The following Tropical System tracks are compiled from various centers, but unless otherwise cited, the data is from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) or from a reanalysis using GRADS. NCEP Reanalysis data provided by the NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD, Boulder, Colorado, USA, from their Web site at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/. The data usually does not match the information from the advisories, but is closer to the Best Track data. However official Best Track data should be considered the final and official tracks. The data also includes Investigation areas as well as pre- and post-advisory information With the January 2016 issue, I began adding smoothed tracks for post Tropical Cyclone stages derived using the NCAR reanalysis data. The raw observations will continue to be included in the primary track with the smoothed track immediately following. This recognizes the "noise" in the reanalysis data. As always, these tracks are preliminary. On 27 October 2016 a trough lay off the west Italian coastline. By 18:00z an extratropical low developed southeast of Sicily which slowly drifted southward. The system slowly developed, displaying a satellite presentation consistent with a subtropical depression on the 29th. Development continued and subtropical storm and later tropical storm status was achieved on the 30th. Satellite wind retrieval of 50 knots on the 31st may represent the maximum winds of the system. During this time, the system was unofficially assigned the name Iona. Once tropical storm strength was achieved, the system began a rapid movement toward the ESE. Transition back to an extratropical system, based on satellite presentation is estimated to have occurred south of the island of Crete mid-day on the 31st. The system continued to cross Cyprus before being absorbed into a larger system to the east. The system was last analyzed inland in Syria. Iona twice reached minimum pressures, as an extratropical system estimated to be 1009 mb (28th) and later as a tropical system with an estimated 1005 mb on the 31st. === S.
