Paul - The total totals index is useful, but remember that it's only a
guide, as far as I know - the TT's index shows if the atmospheric
conditions are correct for storms/showers etc - but if the ground
conditions are wrong, then nothing will occur unfortunately.  An example
is that after we had the cold front come through earlier this week
(technically early last week since it's Sunday today) and the day after
our TT's were 40-45, but we had cool dry gusty SW'ly winds, so therefore
the conditions were unsuitable for storms :-(  On the other hand, we've
had storms when TT's have been 25-30!

This is available at Sydney University I think.... We had an AMOS meeting
where the person gave a demonstration of the 3 D effects od clouds.

Hi to all  the weather-loving folk out there!

My name is Greg Browning,  I live in a NE suburb of Melbourne called
View Bank,  and am a new addition to the e-mail list.  Over the years I
have had a passing interest in extreme weather events without having
experienced anything too severe, firsthand.  More recently, after having
watched some interesting severe-weather documentaries on TV, my interest
in such phenomena has dramatically increased.  With some further reading
(and web-surfing) on the subject ,and subsequent increase in
understanding of storm dynamics,  I am now firmly hooked on
storm-chasing.  At this stage, however,  I have spent much more time
looking at road maps etc. than cumulonimbus clouds- but hey, its all
valuable experience (at least that's what I tell myself)!

To remedy this situation I have decided that this summer (Nov-Dec)  I
will leave the fickle Melb weather for the more  promising pastures of
Darwin. If anyone out there has done such a trip could they reply giving
me any tips, locations,advice etc. which might make my trip more
rewarding? (Thanks to Michael Bath & Michael Thompson for replies
already received)

I think it's great that this mailing-list exists, and plans for the
creation of some type of storm-chasing Society  would be a further
positive step-count me in.

Jane from melbourne - did you catch the storms?? any good?? I just read the
warnings n the BOM site! Lucky u! Anyway, Anthony : whilst I realise that all
conditions have t be right for svere storms, the toal totals index is
normally a great indicator, and looking at Tuesdays total toals, could be a
very busy day for all. It preditcs (note I underlined that!) values over 55
for all eastern NSW and Vict, and has a patch of 60 + somewhere Central / Mid
North Coast (hopefully over me!!). Lets cross all fngers & hope thyat this is
what we have all bee waiting for....a proper start to the storm season!

In regards to your comment in your "location and introduction" of:

Lately storm situations have become rain situations.  I hope that's not
a trend.

I have to agree with you there, lately rain or showers have been more
common then storms which isn't quite the "norm" here in Brisbane.  Even
though often we have some cloud preceding fronts, our temperatures are
still amply warm for storm development.  Hopefully when the inland heat
trough really starts to kick in, we'll get some more storms!

Actually, I wrote a whole lot more, but somehow everything after "it"
was snipped!

What I said was that I understand the 3-d software is US based, but
will ask Don White, who does the scripts for 7 weather, where it comes
from.

Several people have said they thought emails from the list server
weren't getting through. Here's one that only partly got through!

Paul - what is the URL that you are using for your TT's?  The one I'm
looking at only has TT's of 45 - and they're in QLD, the highest TT
value for NSW is 40...
I use the links of the ASW (Australian Severe Weather) charts page.

Hi all,

I've noticed a few people bring up the topic of "meetings" about certain
aspects of weather, but I'd like to remind you that there are already
Australian weather meetings!  They are on each Wednesday night 9pm EST
and 7pm WST, the meetings are done through Internet Relay Chat - for
those of you who perhaps aren't familar with Internet Relay Chat (or IRC
for short) it is where everyone is in a "room" and you can see each
others names.  You type text and then press enter to send it to everyone
in that room so everyone sees it.  So it's just like everyone being at a
conference about weather, except you can sit down in the comfort of your
own home and "talk"!  And that you type and read instead of speak and
listen!

Meetings are held in a room called #Weather (naturally :-)  ) and they
are on the Undernet Chat servers, Jacob posted out the information on
how to get on last week.  So scroll back through your emails if you're
interested, or email Jacob or myself and we'll try and help you!  It's
great fun being able to talk about weather with other people who are
also interested in weather!  It would be great to really get quite a few
people on - currently we already have a few regulars that come on, and
it would be great to have more!

Just on that note - for those who don't come, is it because of the time
is unsuitable?  Or for some other reason?  It would be useful to know -
as we have changed the time a few times to try and find out what
date/time is best for most people.
