From: disarm at braenet.com.au X-Sender: disarm at braenet.com.au (Unverified) X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 04:14:19 +1100 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aussie-weather: sydney storms Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com These are the notes i wrote while i was stuck at work about the storm as it hit the concord/fivedock area of sydney. 9.30 pm, went outside and observed lightning towards the west towards the blue mountains. 9.50 observed a nice shelf cloud extending all along the city(could make it out by the reflection of lights! 10.05pm, wind picking up,lots of lightning to the west.moving very fast towards the coast. 10.20pm storm hits,heavy rain and lots of lightning, cannot tell if there is hail or not.. ARG 5 car loads of people as ths storm hits !!! GRRRRRRRRR(lightning VERY frequent, very frustrating being stuck at work.) 10.40 main body of the storm has passed, constant rain and lightning still. 11pm, went outside again, storm headed slightly towards the north,the city probably missing the main brunt of it.(although i cant confirm..) i reckon ive missed one of the best lightning shows in months,at least this year. 11.30 still no signifficant drop in temperature, maybe 1-2 degrees maximum drop.. but i cant really tell..still sprinkling lightly, all of that was what i wrote word for word on a piece of paper during the storm..(i had a view out a glass window so i could spot lightnig/heavy rain) 4am, got back from work.. very muggy and im tired so i must go to sleep :) hope im up by 11am to catch any action planned for tomorrow!!! night all...or morning ? ;) Matt in sydney, (hope this in depth enough for ya! http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/storm/199811070852.html has a beautiful pic of the storm systems that hit....(lat 34 is approx where syd is) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Michael Thompson"To: Subject: aussie-weather: Storms - missed most of the action Date: Sat, 7 Nov 1998 22:49:09 +1100 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com 10.30pm Saturday The radar showed a line of storms from off Moruya to Sydney, it seemed that lightning was all around except in the southern Illawarra, tried to get a few photos but it was not consistent enough. You would have been in a better situation had you gone up during the night. You would have observed a nice shelf cloud. I took some video footage of it from my place and then the battery ran out. But I got at least 30 minutes or so if reasonable structure and some nice 'cow' thunder. The other battery is stuffed lasting 5 minutes... We had a gust front well ahead of the storm which mean the storm was weakening. It shows on the nasa satpics that the reflectivity of the cold cloud tops break down near Sydney rather than intensify. There was plenty of lightning around, but very little close, it was also hard to get any decent shots as there were no concentrated cells as such, you would see one great flash to to NW, turn the camera there, and then nothing for the next 2-3 minutes, except for a flash to the SE, E, S, N, etc, anywhere the camera was not pointed. Like Matt said, the storm here too was proceeded by a long shelf cloud, I was in a relatively dark area and could make it out easily. Here the shelf cloud had outrun the main body of the rain by at least 15 minutes. Well I say rain, but the gutters did not get a flush here there was that little. Actually the whole storm had that " worn out " look and feel, it must have been great back west of the ranges. Which gets back to another reason why the lightning was so hard to take pics of, it was mostly weak short multi branch anvil stuff, very few CG's, in fact I probably only say 3-4. I looked far more impressive on radar than in life. Activity is still evident to the ENE (with embedded Cb in the cloud mass) moving away quite rapidly. Localised cells are developing to the east of Canberra at the moment (before the upper atmosphere stabilises and cuts the tops off). To the south through to the WNW there is almost total clearance apart from isolated fair weather cu. Some showers earlier this morning and last night's activity resulted in around 15mm. You can then pause shots, or capture pieces of video that u need. There are some hardware requirements , such as leads & video card (which u should have already), but its pretty easy. The stills can be quite good depending of course of he quality of the film/camera etc. But yeah you can get some great shots. The better option I reckon is to get a digital cam...much better. However (depending on what type of prog u have) u can select an option that checks for mail every so many minutes and notifies you when there is new mail If u use Microsoft, go to tools, and options, and u will see it. Kevin, It depends on your e-mail provider and the software you use to read your mail. There's fibrous anvils to the SW and S but not too interesting. Some activity may continue around Stanthorpe but with the heat of the day, everything has eased. If anything happens, I won't miss it! The trough responsible is weakening but should still cause t'storms from the NSW mid north coast to Brisbane. Any activity here would probably be more likely through the inland. Well, away from the net and chasing, visiting friends near Toronto (western shore of Lake Macquarie - SW suburbs of Newcastle). Saturday dawned similar to Sydney and Wollongong by the sound of it: thick stratocumulus gunge and cool with calm conditions. This burnt off by about 10.30am with small cumulus and a light northerly blowing. The moisture haze was quite thick, limiting the view somewhat. It was not until about 1pm that I could see some congestus - to the far north and also a little to the west. The stuff to the west did nothing but the convection to the north continued and developed into a Cb within an hour. At around 3pm some anvil cloud spread in from the SW while the large cluster to the north was becoming quite spectacular. My friend and I drove up to Mt Sugarloaf west of Newcastle (412m elev) to get a better view. At the top it has a 360 degree panorama, only interrupted by 3 large telecommunications towers. The storm to the north I guessed was about 150km away, putting it near Taree. A line of congestus spread westwards from the main area of action, although the awful haze prevented any view of base features. It was still photogenic of course, with nice crisp updraft towers and sharp anvil speading ENE. To the west and SW through the haze we could see what appeared to be weak Cbs in the background, and turkey towers closer - probably over Wollemi NP. After about 30 minutes a large thick anvil structure could be seen through the haze to the distant WNW. After we headed back home and the sunset approached (~6pm), this system could be seen in its full glory! A thick anvil with overshooting bulges in at least 4 locations strectched from NW to N probably over 250km in length. At the rear of the storm could be seen backshearing and mammatus. This was a big storm - I guess it was pushing the 15km mark in height - much higher than the storm observed earlier to the north. By about 7.30pm it had began to weaken, dashing hopes for a lightning show. Camera shots at night requires lots of patience, a tripod and cable release, Michael Bath would better advise on exposure settings etc, I go 2-3 F stops up from fully open.
