come.. There may be lightning observed to the SW later. Will see...

Take a look at;

ftp://geo.msfc.nasa.gov/Weather/GMS-5/gif/vis/4km/9812100532.gif

Rather big (1.7MB) but it shows two cyclones, one in the northern
hemisphere and the other, our beloved Thelma, in the southern
hemisphere. They are almost at the same longitude drawing their cloud
in an almost symmetrical way as well. A fascinating site and one which
shows just how unusual this season will prove to be.

While I'm at it, lets hope that when Thelma hits land in the next day
or so, that it does so with enough warning to get people well out of
the vicinity:-(

Spectacular thunderstorms (3 separate storms in total) hit the city last
Tuesday afternoon, with large hail in places. I missed them, but there was
a less spectacular thunderstorm near Akaroa (where I was at the time).
However, I witnessed another storm late this morning in Christchuch -
thunder, lightning, plus some hail in the suburbs.
The weather over NZ has been dominated by a cool (quite cold in the far
south - snow on the mountains) and disturbed southwesterly flow since
Tuesday. Such airflows, especially when disturbances cross land which has
been heated by the sun, are often the cause of summer thunder/hailstorms in
NZ.

I just have this hunch that tomorrow may fire up to the SW of Sydney. Be
ready to deploy resources guys. If you want to chase, get teamed up with
someone from tonight and be ready to go. The only problem seems to be that
there is not real strong upper air force the storms to move but even a
lightning show would do some. I am not able to chase later so that may spoil
my afternoon however, I think heading S is a good idea for Sat and Sun...

I have heard reference to this symmetrical low behaviour by Clive in
Victoria who chased with us in Qld during early October.
