Hi all
The satellite Image of the 1000hpa low off Cairns seems to improve each time
its updated. The BoM maintains it is still in an unfavourable environment
to start cyclogenesis, but its doing quite well in its development right
now.

Fantastic, Ben, I look forward to your database once lunch and drinks and playing with the grandies' toys is over. It's Christmas Day, around 6.something a.m. Came home last night approx 10p.m. and saw lightening flashes out to the ESE, but a long way away.
Another question - does ASWA have a policy re condolences etc for weather related deaths? Maybe it's a girl thing, but I think it would be appropriate for this group, and will even volunteer to be the one, should members like the idea.

We will certainly see good action in Melbourne especially to the E and NE. I
would not be surprised to see some severe action. LI to the E and NE of -4
to -6 in that area.
This means that area should develop very early like yesterday.

Some of the rainfall from NE NSW in this event was spectacular. Uki, SSW
of Murwillumbah had 366 mm to 9 am yesterday including 360 mm in 6 hours
from 1.45 am. No wonder the Tweed rose 4.4 m in 1 hour downstream. Brays
Creek to the west of Murwillumbah had 176 mm in 7 hours as well.

Merry Christmas all - Patrick from Canberra
Some Cu development occuring (10.30am EDT 25/12/98) on ranges to the SW - activity at
this stage does not seem as enthusiastic as it was this time yesterday (but it is very
early in the day to expect too much) and we have considerably more moisture to work with
today (DP of 14.7 as opposed to around 8 or 9 yesterday).
Canberra received a couple of drops of anvil rain about 3pm. Activity then became
subdued for a couple of hours due to the heavy cirro-stratus from storms to the west.
Around 6pm things got more interesting as the sea-breeze front approached from the east.
Along the line of this front some quite spectacular looking cells developed. It was
interesting to work out which way they would move as individual cells were moving from
SW to NE (the anvils moved more from W to E), whereas the line of propagation seemed to
be moving from E to W. At the same time a new lot of single cell storms had re-developed
over the ranges to the west. An interesting observation was the relatively high base
(around 3-4 km) and low precipitation of the cells over the ranges to the west in the
dry air contrasted with the lower bases (< 1km) in the line of cells moving along
the sea-breeze (combined with outflow boundary) from the east.
In the end the line of propogation fizzled near the eastern part of Canberra (the
airport to the east received 2.8mm and I in the west received 0mm but observed some
interesting clouds and lightning). Some more respectable falls would have occured
further east.
The other interesting observation was the rapid dissipation of all activity (to the east
and west) by about 9pm. At 9.30 the sky was totally clear.
Hope Santa delivers some more today,

Hi Pat,
Looks like the storm situation is good as early development except in
certain circumstances is not good. You should find the cap should be holding
the convection and it will break later. I think.
The indications are that it should happen down there.

It's hot as hell here (36 C or so) with 5/8 Cu some with a little
vertical development, but they look capped.
Light to moderate N - NW'ly.

Me and my big mouth! In the last twenty to thirty minutes the clouds
have EXPLODED!! I've got large cumulus congestus to the south-west and
north-west and what looks to be a shallow thundershower to the
south-east!
Things are really looking up!

At the moment in Orange its 28c 1019 hPa 48% Humidity which is high for this
area. E. breeze at about 5 knots. Some scattered cumulus cloud. We may get a
storm later but I won't hold my breath.

You are a little to the East for storms I would think. The area around the
Central west or further west should fire.
I can see a storm to the far SW from Schofields Sydney which is on the
satpic at the moment. 3:27pm

I just realised that my clock was out when I sent the last letter/weather
report. My real time clock is playing up on the hardware side. The battery
is OK.
Contrary to popular belief, forgetting to adjust the clock was not cause
by the consumption of Christmas cheer.
The time date should have been about 3.00pm 15.00Hrs 25/12/98.

Hi Kevin,
I just read your message and maybe able to give a little advice.
Point and shoot cameras can be quite good if you use a faster speed film -
the DX coding tricks the camera into getting some fairly good results,
although you can't beat a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) for getting the longer
exposure shots.
Maybe this will help you a little, I don't want to sound bigheaded but
almost 10 years of professional photography helps a little.

Weird weather in Adelaide at the mo. Don't know what the synoptic is, but
we've just have a wind change (to the west) accompanied by a 5 degree drop
in temp in 5 minutes. Odd linear (N/S aligned) high-based cloud passed
o/head that had nice mammatus and virga but looked like mostly waste anvil.
Out to the east over the Mt. Lofty ranges I see exploding cumulus
towers.....
hmmm....unfortunately I'm too drunk to chase.....

Hi every1,
I had to go offline for about four hours due to storms in the area (and
champagne!) but thought I'd let y'all know what's happening here.
Took off up Mt. Wycheproof (43 m. above the surrounding plain) to get
some shots of burgeoning Cb. Got some nice congestus shots but the cc
lightning spooked me and I drive around town trying to get a decent shot
of the mammatus from a storm to the SE. Had about four high-base but
shallow Cb cells go over and about 1 mm. of large-drop rain.
Currently about 29 - 30 C and getting very dark west and NW. I'll have
to go offline again I think.
Hope others have had some Christmas cheer, at least I got my present!

The Victorians seem quiet so, with advisories and warnings out for
several areas, hopefully they will have chase reports for us ( dont
forget to fill in the severe thunderstorm report form which Paul set up:-

probably in the southern + central tablelands and slopes which we're

I hope Paul Yole chased the very large storm (possibly a sunpercell) Large
anyway. It is in W Victoria and one to watch. There is another major cell
around Melbourne. Will check out the radar....
As the e-mail from David suggests, we are out chasing so anyome who needs to
chase please indicate their interest and e-mail the list. If you have a car,
you can either chase with us or chase around Sydney. I am hoping that
chasers cover as many areas as they can to see what we can do. If you want
to even venture from your place to a good vantage point is a good idea and
you could see so much more.
Whatever you do, take your sunscreen and hats. It should get quite hot.

A good scattering of cells developed from about 1pm EDT onwards mainly,
but not totally, confined to the higher ranges. Cells were mostly high
base LP. Looked good from a distance.
Thunder was heard for about 30 min from around 3pm and Canberra was then
"anvilled out" for most of the rest of the afternoon. The sea breeze
front was poorly defined as it arrived around 7pm - it got a couple of
small cells developing explosively to the cirrus layer but they were too
small to be sustainable.
I have been watching a much more substantial area of storms developing
and spreading to the SW over the alpine areas. I would not be surprised
if some were not severe - (as are likely linked to the storms being
warned of by the VIC BOM in NE Vic) great to see the spreading,
exploding cauliflowers in front of the setting sun. It seems that this
area will pass south of Canberra overnight.
Unlike last night the storm area to the south does not show signs of
dissipating and given development over western NSW and NW Vic, I
wouldn't be surprised if we don't have some activity later tonight.
Hopefully it won't be in the morning and then get in the way of
tomorrow's convection.
On another note, Cyclone Cora looks pretty interesting - I am sure Fiji
is well pleased with its continuing southerly track.
I also notice the circulation east of Cairns seems less well defined
than this morning (although the cloud area is thicker). Looks like the
Qld BOM were right in saying the environment was not conducive to
further development.

I forgot to mention, those who wish to chase must get up early and be on the
net earlier tomorrow morning around 7:00am - 7:30am. Anyone who cannot wake
up will miss out on the directions based on the final decision. Our plan is
to chase either down the S Tablelands or the Central West and Tablelands
Orange to Cowra and so on.

Even though the conditions were not absolutely alike, I would say the
situation in western Victoria was similar to the Tornado day in January 1997
as well as 10th November 1997. Take a look at the latest satpic JCU

I've just had a look at the SATPIC, I think it's a little hard to tell if
there is any circulation, I'll wait for the next update.
At the moment I'm in Geelong and it has gone deathly still - there is a
slight rumble of thunder in the distance.

I wouldn't bet on it, but it has the right structure conditions etc for it
to be a supercell. But more in depth radar scans are needed to define this.
All I'm saying is that it has developed in the correct environment.
By the way, aren't you the person who is in contact with Clive Herbet??
